In the narrative lectionary reading for this upcoming Sunday we read about Moses' call to ministry. The reading is Exodus 3:1-15.
Moses is a murderer, hiding out in the wilderness. No longer living a life of riches as a prince, but as a shepherd in exile. It's these moments God show up, no? The times when we have lost it all, the times of our deepest humility...
I noticed two things in this reading that I want to highlight.
1.) Moses saw the burning bush that was not consumed and went over because he was curious. When God noticed that Moses was checking out the bush, it is only then that He spoke. How long was that bush waiting there? How many other people walked right by? I've always thought the bush was just for Moses, but maybe it's just that Moses was paying attention. What burning bushes have we walked past in our lives?
2.) Moses was told to take his shoes off because it was a place where God was present. It was Holy because of God's presence. The same God that is in you was the God in that bush. Do you treat your temple with the same respect? When you look in the mirror, do you see it with the same awe you would look upon the Holy Land?
May God help each of us to see ourselves the way God sees us. May we treat ourselves with awe and respect. May, tonight, each of you take your shoes off...
